Wood Burning Grills Or Barbecues For Outdoor Cooking
Wood burning grills or barbecues are an invention which uses wood which is burnt in a firebox of some sort, and has an ash catcher underneath.
It also has a grate or mesh styled top which sits over the fire on which meat and other food is put to cook. The smoke coming off the fire helps to give the food the flavour of the traditional grill or barbecue.
When thinking about purchasing wood burning grills there are a number of shapes and sizes to choose from on the market.
There is the grill that burns wood pellets. There are a number of these which are designed like a large drum, some like a pig and several others. The pellets are about two and a half centimetres long and seven millimetres in diameter. There is a hopper on the grill which stores them and feeds the pellets into the section or box with the fire, these pellets are quite efficient and leave a fine ash behind. They can be purchased in different wood smells such as mesquite, oak, apple, cherry, hickory and others. The rate the pellets are fed into the firebox can be controlled to allow for a high or low temperature for grilling or smoking. Before considering purchasing one of these check the availability of the wood pellets in the local area.
One other design is like a large box, with three sections, the lower section catches the ash, the middle section is where the fire is and wood fuel can be fed into it, and the upper is the cooking area. It has another feature, a wheel on the top on one side which is wound up if the fire gets too hot. This is designed to lift the food up to stop it burning or cooking too fast and at the front is a juice catcher. The cooking plate is designed at a slight angle for juices to run off into the catcher. There are several choices in this design.
This next grill is shaped like a large box, but is fully enclosed around the outside except for the grill section on the top and a door to the firebox at the front. Hinged side shelves for either side of the grilling section, a spit which is motor driven and a cover made from stainless steel are all optional extras.
Another is a design like a chimineas from Mexico. This is like a pot belly stove but without a door. The piece above the firebox area, the chimney, can be removed and a roasting plate may be attached to the firebox section for using as a grill. Another piece designed like a hood can also be attached over the firebox when wanting to cook roasts or pizzas instead of using as a barbecue.
There are also the homemade wood burning grills and barbecues, these are generally designed with brick or concrete block sides and back with an open front, a lower section for the ash, a middle section for the wood, and the upper part may be a piece of plate steel or mesh, or anything else in steel which can be used to cook meat and so on. They also have either a chimney of a sort, or a hole at the back to allow excess smoke to escape, especially where a solid plate is used.
There are others in the market to choose from and what is purchased may depend on where it is to go, how many to cook for, the price and many other things.
